Pontoon Houseboat Plans

We sometimes receive some correspondence from our readers about how to approach obtaining plans for building a suitable cabin or enclosure for their own pontoon houseboat. I also like to read and follow a few boating forums when I have the time and opportunity so I'm aware there is an interest in this subject. As such and because It is definitely critical that all important design elements be thoroughly considered and thought out and decided upon before acquisitions of any materials or supplies can begin the best ...

Warning About Buying LED Under Deck Lighting

I've observed that another site is promoting the sale/sales of what I even consider a very cool LED Under Deck lighting fixture(s) for pontoon boats. I first don't want to see anybody spending their hard earned dollars on buying something they can't also utilize and enjoy. I secondly don't want to see anyone harassed on the water for using said lighting and maybe also get caught up in something like BWI because of said lighting (giving them a reason to check you out). Thirdly in looking over ... << MORE >>

Buying a Pontoon Boat Bimini

One thing I’ve always found frustrating is the fact that nobody stands behind their products. Sure a lot of places want to sell you something, but if you do manage to tear it up somehow they sure aren’t very helpful in sourcing or providing the necessary parts needed to fix it. Suppose you manage to rip your pontoon boats bimini top up on a overhanging limb, well almost exclusively you’ll be screwed and forced to purchase an ... << MORE >>

Boating the Muskingum River 2010

We’ve observed the first snowflakes of the season here in our part of the country, and our boat is safely stored away. Now our thoughts can reflect back to some of the experiences we shared with our friends this past summer. The atmosphere this summer was somewhat different, perhaps even subdued. The spontaneous fun that we’ve always enjoyed was somewhat lackluster, maybe due to the effects the economy and the job market has had on us all. Many of our friends have lost their jobs; others seemed ...

How to Replace Your Pontoon Boat Carpeting

So the carpeting on your pontoon boat is looking somewhat shabby or otherwise worn out. If you own or have access to basic homeowner tools you’ll probably be able to do the job yourself, and also save yourself some money in the process. The hardest part of the job is the actual removal of the old carpet.

When a pontoon boat is assembled the manufacturers glue the carpeting down to the bare deck before any other hardware or seating has ...

Quality Boating Accessories & Supplies

Is your pontoon boat in need of a rebuild or restoration to improve its appearance? Fortunately with their relatively simple construction pontoon boats may be the simplest and easiest boat out there to work on yourself. Depending on the overall condition your current pontoon boat or one you’re contemplating on buying. With quality replacement seats, furniture, and accessories, or maybe even a new bimini top or canopies you may be well on your way to restoring your pontoon to maybe a better than new condition. Let’s use a photo of this pontoon boat as an extreme example of a very good rebuild and restoration.

Building a Boat Dock with Pontoons

Have you ever considered building your own personal boat dock or fishing pier? But the problem was I was actually having a hard time locating enough suitable ... << MORE >>

Etiquette around Marinas and Docks

Now that summer is winding down for this season I thought it was time to reflect back on some of my experiences at the marinas/docks I encountered. Marinas are often busy places where fellow boaters are making the transitions necessary for preparing themselves for a day on the water. The busiest times are often on weekend mornings when boats, boaters, families and friends are all arriving for their anticipated day on the water they’ve been looking forward to all week. Sometimes in all of our eagerness to get out on ... << MORE >>

All About Boat Propellers

Everything You Really Need to Know About Boat Propellers
Preface
In determining boat performance, propellers are second in importance only to the power available from the engine itself. Without the propeller's thrust, nothing will happen.

Your boat's propeller affects every phase of performance-handling, riding, comfort, speed, acceleration, engine life, fuel economy and safety.

Like tires on a car, the propeller conducts the power from the engine to the "road." Your propeller is the primary connection between ...

Marine Stereo Systems

There is nothing like a day on the water for putting a grin on your face. For some boaters, the grin gets even wider when there are good tunes playing. Yet, the marine environment is also hard on electronics, and a washed out busted stereo could also remove that grin away from your face fast.

That’s why you should be looking to marine stereos. The best components carry an IP (International Protection) rating. The higher the IP number, ...

I felt it was better in both of our interests to include the information posted below by a well known and respected authority of subject. Anchoring Your Boat

At least for now, there are not any Federal requirements for carrying an anchor aboard your recreational boat. Though some states do require all boats to carry an anchor, but there is a lot more too successful anchoring than just having one on board.

Many boaters feel that an anchor is merely a device for tossing overboard when you want to stop for lunch or slip into a quiet cove for a few casts. If you're caught in a storm and fighting desperately to keep your disabled boat from being swept onto a rocky shore or into some other dangerous area, however, you'll be glad to have something with pointy things on it dragging across the bottom and eventually digging in or holding on. An anchor is also the best way to hold your boat in the river, maybe right over the spot where that big catfish just may be hiding!

Boat Ramp Launching & Loading - Procedures & Etiquette

Understanding proper boat ramp procedures and etiquette can improve safety, and can substantially reduce launching and loading times and avoid confrontations. This set of guidelines is in no way the final word on boat ramp procedures and etiquette, but should give everyone a solid foundation for doing it right way.

Please don't be the boater who causes delays for everyone else also waiting to use the ramp.

Launching:

1. Boat ramp etiquette starts before you even reach the ramp. Personally, I try to load all my gear into the boat before leaving my driveway. However, I know this isn't always possible in all circumstances. Whatever the case, those last minute items and completing your prep list needs to be done before proceeding on to the launch lane.

We were a live-aboard family with three active children at a freshwater marina on a tributary of the Willamette River near Portland, Oregon. Other kids were already swimming in the cove because it was that kind of day - hot and lazy. This was a common practice by adults as well as children during the warm summer of 1999.

Our Houseboat Rebuild Wiring Considerations???

A reader replied: Great restoration job! I am flirting with buying a restore project or from the hull up. When it came time to running wires for lights, outlets, gauges, etc., how (where) did you run the wires?... up along studs?

This is a great question that’s difficult for us to actually pin down for your personal use. First, let me say that what I am not doing here is giving you specific advice. To be able to do that I would need to know specific knowledge of your actual needs, and the financial resources available to you. When I was actually designing and putting our boat to paper for our build we were hard pressed to find any real useful information available on the web that we found actually helpful in putting our build together. But the bigger question is this, how do you envision actually using your boat? Is it going to be a dock or marina baby with ready access to AC power and rarely taken out? Is the installation and availability of air conditioning mandatory to you for your comfort aboard the boat? If so a person would or may be better off wiring accordingly and relying on the AC shore power and a supplemental generator for your primary energy needs.

1st Measure the diameter of the pontoons you are considering.
2nd Now let’s take a measurement of their total length.
3rd Now we’ve got to figure out what the pontoons we’re contemplating purchasing weight capacity will be. Once you know or have determined the weight of equipment, deck, cabin, people and all other necessary items that will be carried on your boat open this link. Now match up your measurements against the ones listed on the chart to get a good determination of the pontoons actual safe recommended load, and remember for safety they should be at least 25% more than you're actual anticipated weight.

Houseboat Interior Rebuild Continued 4th of ???

As when building the exterior walls both strength, durability, and weight have to be taken into consideration as the interior components are constructed. To conserve on both weight and materials the actual exterior walls are in essence exposed and part of the finished end work. Thus the reason I went ahead and pre-finished them before installing any of the inside fixtures.

Many of the smaller movable components such as the two L shaped dinette seats and the partition wall between the kitchen counter and upper cabinet were constructed in the garage as the finish  was applied in the boat. By the time the interior walls were dry and cured a bit, some of the components were actually built and ready to be installed into the boat interior. As you can see in the picture below of the pre-existing upper kitchen cabinet the actual structural element is made as light as possible by relying on the physical shell of the boat to complete its integrity. This unit was simply fastened by screws to the wall and ceiling and it managed to hold up for well over 30 years.

Houseboat Interior Renovation Begins 3rd of ???

Once the houseboat cabin was fully closed in and weather tight. My first order of business was to prime and paint the deck floors with some paint I had on hand. Though this step isn’t actually necessary, since the paint was essentially free, it seemed the convenience of painting it would make it worthwhile. You see by this point I’d spent a considerable amount of time fooling around on graph paper laying out and drawing the new interior for the cabin. Since the best laid plans on paper sometimes prove difficult on real applications, I felt the pencil lines transposed from my drawings would stand out much better against a painted surface.

Our Houseboat Restoration Begins 2nd of ???

After a lot of running around and attempting to source up quality materials for this boating application, I settled on a good source of number 1 kiln dried after treatment 2x4’s that I found. Treated wood was chosen for its higher resistance to decay, insects, and hopefully my lifetime of enjoyment and use without further structure issues. They were courteous and allowed me to cherry pick through and choose the lumber for myself after a brief explanation of its intended use. Treated 2x4’s as a general rule are often riddled with knots making for too much waste and unusable weak framing after being ripped in half for this application. I purchased forty of them on the first trip and utilized them all with very little waste and had to buy more so be prepared to maybe need more materials than you’d anticipate in your build.

Houseboat Buying Tips

Buying a houseboat can represent one of the largest investments a person could make in their lifetime. And buying a new houseboat may not be realistic, and getting into a used houseboat without some problems can be almost unrealistic too. There always seem to be some issues that need to be worked out, so you must be especially diligent when looking to purchase a used houseboat. Also its just like when buying a home, we need to examine a home thoroughly before getting a professional once over. There’s really not any real difference when looking at and considering a used houseboat purchase.

Spring Boat Inspection 101

Before you launch your boat this coming year, it’s always best to give everything a good once over.

Hopefully it won't be to long until our boats will find their way out of winter storage, and we’ll be backing them into the water hoping for a great day in the great outdoors. But if you don't take some time before you leave the marina or your driveway, you may be heading back at the dock a lot sooner than you intended. Nothing is more frustrating than a ruined planned outing, unless maybe it's a trip that got ruined right when you’ve heard the fishing had turned on. Do yourself a big favor and give your boat a thorough going over before it's time to put her in. Doing a pre-launch inspection is a very productive way to spend a waning winter day and you'll still have time to take care of any problems without having to rush around frantically at the last minute. This is also a good time to reflect back to last year's season and remember any of those things that you were going to add or change before this upcoming season.

It can be a very effective means of alleviating the heat gain incurred and improving comfort from the hot summer sun inside your home or boat. The reflective types of window films works similarly to a one-way mirror allowing people inside to view out clearly, yet providing privacy from others seeing inside during daylight hours. Window film is a very effective means of protecting furniture, rugs, and draperies from sun fading. Window film is also easily installed, and applying the film to most windows can easily be accomplished in a half hour. The basic tools for working with window film are a spray bottle, squeegee, and a sharp utility knife.

Marine vs Pressure Treated Plywood

Over the years part of my focus has been to caution newbie’s on the pitfalls of purchasing old steel, and wood framed glass boats without having someone knowledgeable giving them guidance. As time goes by and the economy gets worse, there are more derelict houseboats advertised as "once in a lifetime bargains”, “fixer uppers", "project boat" or "distress sales". In truth many of these craft are beyond economical repair, and are really Junkers that are really ready to be scrapped. Disposal is becoming expensive.

Boating the Muskingum River

The Muskingum River is the largest river that runs solely within the state of Ohio, with a drainage area that takes in one fifth of the landmass of the state. At one time this rich resource was heavily relied on for the transportation of necessary goods and materials needed for economic growth of the area surrounding it. By the late 1950’s commercial river traffic had fallen off to just a trickle and the federal government then returned the Muskingum River and all the improvements thereof back to the state of Ohio. The state then worked on a plan to utilize and regenerate the historical lock and dam system for use by pleasure boaters for additional recreational facilities under the direction of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The navigational system has since been designated as the Muskingum River Parkway and been listed as a National Historical Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2001. This recognition actually parallels such other engineering wonders such as the Hoover Dam, the Empire State building, and the Golden Gate Bridge. This distinction recognizes the Muskingum River hand-operated locks and dams as one of America’s greatest engineering accomplishments.

About Redneck Pontoon Boats

You know a lot of people kind of look down upon old decrepit beat up boats. Sometimes I find myself in a sense envying them at times. I mean what harm can a person really do to anything that’s already beat up on every corner already?
I guess the reason I’m feeling that way is because of the condition of life I’ve found myself in these days. A few years back we found and purchased a brand new pontoon boat for ourselves thinking we’d be happy and satisfied with it for many years to come. Well as it often happens our priorities changed and we found another boat that now better suits and fits our current needs. Now I’m stating here and now that there’s nothing wrong with our previous dream boat at all. But the fact is it is now considered a used boat and being used and with the state of the economy as it is now nobody wants to give us enough for it to even make the payoff on the note that’s still being held on it.

Ethanol Fuel & 4 Cycle Motors

After reading and searching around the net way too much for my satisfaction anyway, there appears there is not any clear answer for ethanol and its effects on marine engines. I stumbled on this information accidentally and read it through extensively and could not find anything detrimental in applying TC-W3 Marine oil in such small quantities in my 4 stroke marine engines and automobiles. I'm hoping it will extend the life of my motors and related components allowing them a longer trouble free service life and reduce fuel related service issues. There are posts that people express positive results with all types of 4-cycle motors mentioned with the exception of boat motors, and I'd think it would also apply to them as well. Pontoon Houseboat Pictures

In reality what is working so well for us is not really a houseboat in many ways. Houseboat Dreaming the Realization

Well it’s been along time coming and a lot of hard work but our floating boat camper is now wet. A lot of things along the way contributed to our desire to own our own houseboat getaway. The peace of mind of being able to float off into the sunset and live our own reality is an enormous relief to us and our continued well being.

Let’s back you up some so you’ll also understand where we’re coming from here. We’ve been boating for quite a few years together, and experienced a lot of wonderful memorial times on the water we’ll never ever forget. For years we’d load our pontoon boat in our driveway every weekend and then point our rig towards the destination we’d chosen to boat that weekend. We were free birds of sorts and it was wonderful to see and explore so many of the area’s rivers and lakes. Our pontoon boat is set up well for camping, and a person also can be pretty comfortable staying in it. But believe me it is a lot of work both before and after each trip getting things organized staged and ready before the weekend and then putting everything back away and spiffing the boat back up late every Sunday evening or early Monday morning. But since we’d never chosen or had a port to call home we lived with all the necessary inconveniences and made it work for us.

Pontoon Houseboat Dreaming Realizing the Dream

After two years of hard frustrating work, we were able to launch the pontoon houseboat that we restored. She floats nice and level and moves along at a respectable speed. We had a minor problem trying to figure out what size of prop to use, but we’ve got that just about worked out. This boat is longer and heavier than our 25 foot pontoon and handles a little differently, but handles well. Of course I haven’t tried to bring it into the dock yet, that may prove interesting to the onlookers.

Everyone who has toured the boat appears to really like it. The ladies appreciate the choice of colors that we used and all the wonderful storage space that my husband built into it. The guys see the workmanship and appreciate his carpentry skills. Thanks to everyone for the compliments. Due to this recession we had to fore go some of the things we wanted for the boat, such as the depth finder and a larger gas tank, but we’ll just have to keep our ears open for a bargain on these items and a few other things that are on our wish list.

Protection and Care of Boat Seating and Upholstery

Please keep your boat seats covered when not in use! The more they are kept covered, the longer they will last. The sunshine will slowly eat away at your seats. You may have noticed boat upholstery that was not kept covered. It will be Dry, Cracked, and Ugly.

Vinyl is porous and will take a stain if left unattended. For that reason, when you have sun bathers’ laying on the seats with lotion on, put a towel down or doing a quick cleaning when back at the dock or trailer will work. Leaves, grass, ink from cardboard boxes, or other items will also stain the vinyl if left unattended.

My Boating and Camping Misadventure

Boating and Camping is a wonderful way and opportunity to see and experience so many places that otherwise may be unattainable. My own first experience of camping and boating involved canoes and rivers. Though I'd had a lot of day trip outings on various streams in the area I live, my real dream was to do some remote river excursions, and get away from some of the crowds. I finally had the opportunity and companionship to go on a long weekend years ago. We traveled to the South Branch Potomac River in eastern West Virginia to float a section of river commonly called the trough. This river and its relatively unspoiled banks of tall trees, unobstructed views of clear blue skies, and occasional cattle pastures with the cattle grazing peacefully right up to the water's edge. With water of such clarity a person could clearly observe the rocks and fish finning twenty feet below on the river bottom, and is in itself a truly soulful experience.

Camping Adventures in the Mountains of West Virginia

My husband and I love to camp and have made quite a few trips to the National Forest located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. We made one of these trips in October after the 911 tragedy. The Air Force was still flying sorties over these mountains because of the proximity to the Washington DC area. This was an eerie feeling. The skies were so empty of air craft and then suddenly you would hear the roar of the fighter jets flying low over the mountain tops. At times you wouldn’t hear the jets until they had passed over and then the reverberation of the engines would echo throughout the valley where we were camped. It was both sobering and awe inspiring, and brought back the horrific sights and sounds of that horrible day, but at the same time made us feel safe. In the area we were camping in, all was peaceful and serene, no sounds except the birds and the creek bubbling over the rocks near where we were camped. It brought home how wonderful our country is, in spite of its problems, that you can still find areas that are very much the same as they were when it was first explored, and can still feel safe to do some exploring of your own.

The Versatile Pontoon Boat

With the state of the nation and the economy in general such as it is these days, are you also trying to get maybe the best bang for your buck? Maybe you should consider acquiring a pontoon boat for the maybe the best versatile boating platform available. I know around here and especially as far as our finances are concerned we are watching everything very carefully anymore.Anything we manage to purchase anymore has to be very utilitarian and versatile for us to justify parting with our hard won and earned money. So if something I own is not really able to pull its weight I'm all for parting ways with it.It's always a shame to sometimes let things go I know, but you're a better person than me if you can keep up with all of the taxes, fees, trailer plates, and insurance for too many toys. There was a time I actually had four different boats scattered either around the yard, or paying storage to keep somewhere else. Well at least for the moment I'm now down to my favorite two, and maybe I'll also be able to manage to keep up with them and keep them current and legal for use.

Have you ever considered exploring from the comforts of your boat?

This is one of our favorite ways and opportunities to see and experience new frontiers. We often set aside a least a few weekends each year for just such exploration and adventures. Often we'll see or maybe hear about new and interesting places and want to experience them for ourselves. Sometimes it seems that half the fun of the entire adventure is often spent on our computers researching about potential new waters to visit and explore for ourselves. Though we really do love to visit the lakes and reservoirs that are within reasonable driving distance of our home, we've really become attached and attracted to the rivers in our area. The rivers just seem to be more majestic with a sort of magical qualities that is really difficult to truly express or explain let alone put into words here.

Boat Necessities and “Nice-to-Haves” for the Boating Season

With the first warm days of late winter, boaters start thinking about getting themselves and the boat ready for the new boating season. We can hardly wait, it’s been a long cold winter and we’re craving freedom, water, and sunshine. Just think in a couple of months we can be cruising down the river and forget about the cold, dreary winter and how difficult this year has proven to be.

My husband is already making plans for getting the motor mounted on the boat and getting the finishing touches completed. As for me, I’m getting all the necessary supplies ready to go on board, and he’s making noises about not taking the whole house on the boat. I don’t mind roughing it a little bit, but it’s nice to have fluffy towels and pretty dishes aboard the boat. He keeps making comments such as “why don’t I just weld a trailer hitch on the house and we’ll tow it behind us”,that aside, he enjoys having home cooked meals aboard, which means pots and pans and silverware, so I tend to tune his complaints out, and continue packing the necessary items that make out time aboard our boat so pleasant and enjoyable.

Why Not Get A Pontoon Boat?

There really is not any rocket science involved in renovating a pontoon boat at all. And It really won't require any special tools that most any homeowner normally wouldn't have or need sometime anyway and a person can save thousands in comparison to new costs. And if money is tight a person can always complete it in stages as cash becomes available. Matter of fact sometimes it's almost an envy to observe how carefree a good time is had on some pretty rough looking pontoons. But when you've put your family and friends on a floating living room even if it's outfitted with lawn chairs it's still a primary ingredient for a wonderful day on the water.

Have You Ever Considered Boating?

Boating can be such a totally free and relaxing experience that you'll be amazed how it sometimes consumes your whole life. After we purchased ours we were amazed ourselves as to how our priorities changed in our day to day life. Sure we were still beat up after hectic days at the grindstone, but we found reserve energy to complete tasks we'd normally procrastinated on till the weekend. Isn't it in reality "working for the weekend" what it's all about? If you too should decide to get into boating I'm willing to bet you'll be working for the weekend also.

When we first purchased our Pontoon Boat we were free birds so to speak. We would trailer our pontoon everywhere visiting new bodies of water and places most every weekend. And it's always refreshing to have so many bodies of new experiences on which to launch our boat. Sometimes we still get that itch and hook up and go someplace new for a refreshing change of pace. But mostly we've settled down to a specific body of water we now call home. It's called the Muskingum River and it's in central Ohio. It's mostly a slow meandering river with historical locks and dams on more or less 10 mile intervals. Though at one time was heavily used for commercial boat traffic, that’s no longer the case and its maintained now exclusively for the use of recreational boaters such as us. And it's like having a several lakes back to back, each with its own unique shoreline character of camps, forests , pastures and homes to observe as we slowly travel its course.
