Pontoon Houseboat Dreaming Realizing the Dream

After two years of hard frustrating work, we were able to launch the pontoon houseboat that we restored. She floats nice and level and moves along at a respectable speed. We had a minor problem trying to figure out what size of prop to use, but we’ve got that just about worked out. This boat is longer and heavier than our 25 foot pontoon and handles a little differently, but handles well. Of course I haven’t tried to bring it into the dock yet, that may prove interesting to the onlookers.

Everyone who has toured the boat appears to really like it. The ladies appreciate the choice of colors that we used and all the wonderful storage space that my husband built into it. The guys see the workmanship and appreciate his carpentry skills. Thanks to everyone for the compliments. Due to this recession we had to fore go some of the things we wanted for the boat, such as the depth finder and a larger gas tank, but we’ll just have to keep our ears open for a bargain on these items and a few other things that are on our wish list.

Last weekend was wonderful; we were able to take a late afternoon cruise with a lot of our friends aboard. It was great to see the front deck full and hear the laughter as we slowly cruised up the river. This is truly the best part of finishing this boat. All the time we were working on it, to have our friends enjoy it with us was the main goal. We had friends aboard for breakfast and the kitchen that he built proved to be a pleasure to work in, plenty of room and space to cook. Of course we all ate too much and drank way to much coffee, everything just always taste better out on the water. Our dog hasn’t really decided whether she likes it or not,but she will adapt. She spends a lot of time on the front deck with her nose out the front gate watching the water go by, but seems happier when we nose it into the sandbar and she can dig in the sand.

When we took her through the locks for the first time, which I was a little intimidated by, but we made it without scratching the boat, thanks to the larger fenders that we bought from Overtons. We had taken the other boat through so many times that we had it down to a routine, this one is different because when I’m on the back deck, I can’t see which of the lock cables he’s going for on the front, so I know which one to grab to pull the back end in to the lock wall. We yelled back and forth a lot and got the job done, without looking too much like rookies. I got the shock of my life the first time we docked it, with the other boat I could just pull the boat over to the dock easily. This one being heavier and a tri-toon, it doesn’t move to the side easily, but we got it done, with out me ending up pulled into the water. So all is well. We will write more about this little adventure as the summer goes on, I’m quite sure there will be more adventures to report. We thank you for visiting us here at Pontoon Houseboat Odyssey
