Installation of Window Film 101

Have you ever considered applying Window film to the exterior windows of your home or your boat? It can be a very effective means of alleviating the heat gain incurred and improving comfort from the hot summer sun inside your home or boat. The reflective types of window films works similarly to a one-way mirror allowing people inside to view out clearly, yet providing privacy from others seeing inside during daylight hours. Window film is a very effective means of protecting furniture, rugs, and draperies from sun fading. Window film is also easily installed, and applying the film to most windows can easily be accomplished in a half hour. The basic tools for working with window film are a spray bottle, squeegee, and a sharp utility knife.

Window film is safe to apply to double pane windows that are less than 40 square feet. Apply the window film only to the interior of any double pane windows, never on the exterior. Do not use any kinds of window film that totally blacks out the window. This kind of film can cause heat gain in the double pane windows leading to possible permanent damage.

Types of window film:

Low-emissivity window film prevents heat loss through the window during the winter heating season and heat gain from the summer sun. Solar control window films can block up to 93 per cent of harmful ultra violet rays that cause skin damage and fade furnishings. Frosted window film allows diffused light into the area while providing total privacy. Decorative and architectural window films diffuse light, provide privacy and make the windows a decorative accent to the room.

Window preparation:

Clean windows thoroughly before beginning window film installation with water, then add just a teaspoon of baby shampoo. Use of the no-tears type of baby shampoo is recommended. Then spray the window, using a razor blade to remove all dirt, grease, paint, or other foreign residue from the glass. Pay special attention when cleaning all the window edges and corners. Thoroughly clean windows assure that the window film installation will be long lasting and have a pleasant appearance.

Window Film Installation:

Measure the window and then cut the window film one inch larger on all sides than the glass area. Cut the film on a clean and dust free surface. Spray the glass surface and both sides of the window film with the baby shampoo solution. Separate the protective liner from the window film and spray the adhesive side of the film. This is made easier if another person is available to do the spraying as the liner is being removed.

Apply the window film to the glass, smoothing into place with your hands. Keep the film aligned maintaining a even amount of excess on all sides. Then spray the window film again and squeegee from the center of the window toward the outer edges. Wrap the squeegee with a soft lint free cloth to absorb the excess water pushed to the edges of the glass.

Now carefully trim the edges of the window film at the edge of the glass with a sharp utility knife holding a plastic ruler or straightedge on the glass and trim the film between the ruler and the window frame.

Most of the resources for this blog were directed towards homeowners but in reality installation in your boat would follow the same principals. Now that you’re informed on how easy it really can be to do the installation yourself what are you now waiting for let’s “Git-R-Done”
